Who We Are

OUR STORY

A dignity-driven nonprofit rooted in equity, committed to removing barriers so every girl and woman can participate fully in school, work, and community life.

Barbara Gay leads Girl's Zone with a deep personal commitment to the women and girls of the Northern Neck and Rappahannock region of Virginia. Her work is not just professional — it is a calling rooted in compassion, lived experience, and an unshakable belief that every woman deserves access to the essentials of dignity.

Barbara founded and built Girl's Zone around a simple truth she had witnessed firsthand: that too many women and girls in our community were going without — without hygiene products, without emergency essentials, without someone in their corner. She set out to change that, one care kit, one workshop, one community partnership at a time.

Under Barbara's leadership, Girl's Zone has grown from a grassroots effort into a structured, impact-driven nonprofit serving multiple counties — providing not just supplies, but hope, confidence, and a genuine fresh start to women rebuilding after crisis and girls discovering their own strength.

Executive Director

Under Barbara's leadership, Girl's Zone has grown from a grassroots effort into a structured, impact-driven nonprofit serving multiple counties — providing not just supplies, but hope, confidence, and a genuine fresh start to women rebuilding after crisis and girls discovering their own strength. Her vision for Girl's Zone is a region where no girl misses school because she lacks what she needs, and no woman faces hardship alone.

Born from a Need.
Built with Heart.

Girl's Zone was built on the belief that access to basic necessities is a matter of dignity and justice. Too many women and girls in our region face daily barriers most people never consider — missing school without hygiene products, leaving dangerous situations with nothing, or lacking essentials simply to show up.

Through partnerships with local schools and service providers, Girl's Zone delivers reliable, confidential access to hygiene products, undergarments, and emergency essentials across our communities.

Our program advances equity and social justice by meeting women and girls exactly where they are — with compassion, without judgment, and with the resources they need to move forward.

Mission & Vision

Two guiding lights that shape everything we do.

Our Mission

Empowering girls and women by providing essential resources, personal care support, confidence-building opportunities, and pathways to healing — helping individuals move from surviving to thriving through compassion, dignity, and empowerment.

Our Vision

A community where every girl grows up confident in her worth, every woman has the support she needs to rebuild & flourish, and no one faces hardship without access to the basic essentials of dignity and care, regardlss of age, race, or socioeconomic status.

Our Core Values

Six principles that guide how we show up every day.

Dignity

Every woman and girl deserves to be treated with the highest respect. Seeking help is an act of strength, never a source of shame.

Equity

Access to basic essentials is a justice issue. Our work removes the systemic barriers that keep women and girls from thriving.

Empowerment

We don't just provide resources — we help women and girls discover their own strength, value, and unlimited potential.

Community

Our work is built on partnership — with schools, agencies, faith communities, and volunteers who share our commitment.

Confidentiality

We provide a safe, judgment-free space. Everyone who reaches out is supported with care, privacy, and discretion.

New Beginnings

We believe a fresh start is always possible. Hope is the foundation of everything we do.
